Description
In May 1649, England was declared by the Rump Parliament to be a republic. There would be no monarchy, and no House of Lords. By the end of 1653, the whole of Britain and Ireland was united under Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate. And in 1660, Charles II was on the throne. The republican experiment may have been short-lived, but it transformed four countries and reset the compact between monarch and Parliament. This year-by-year account tells the story of the republic, exploring what it was like, why it failed, and what it got right.
