Description
From 1563 to 1736 Scotland put thousands of women to death for witchcraft and their supposed crimes have much to tell us about attitudes to women in the past, and in the present day. This book introduces sixteen women who lost their lives or lived in the long shadow of the persecutions. Weaving fact with fiction to explore folklore, strength and femininity, it invites readers to examine their beliefs, investigate the past and find power in the virtues of modern witchcraft. As we journey through the short stories we encounter 'social witches' who are accused of betraying their communities and those who use their powers to cure others and malevolent spirits such as 'Nanny' in Tam O Shanter.
