Description
On a hillside near Ballachulish in May 1752, Colin Campbell, a government agent travelling to evict farm tenants, was assassinated. Campbell's killer evaded capture, but Britain's rulers insisted this challenge to their authority must result in a hanging. The chosen victim was James Stewart, a Jacobite veteran who was organising resistance to Campbell's takeover of lands long held by his clan, the Appin Stewarts. In a continuation of the terror tactics used after Culloden, his corpse hung for months to intimidate the community he had served.
